Portrait FAQ
What should we wear?
Before we get into style choices, the most important things when choosing outfits are to do a FULL try on and to have your outfits finalized about a week before your session (not morning of!). Dance around in front of your mirror and see how the outfits move. The less you need to fidget with your clothes, the more photos you're going to get! By finalizing your outfits in advance, this gives you time to buy any missing pieces and keeps your session day stress-free.
I recommend wearing whatever makes you feel the happiest and most comfortable. If you're feeling good at your session, chances are that will show in your photos! Selecting outfits for two people can feel overwhelming, and it helps to pick one piece that you know you want to include (such as a dress, shirt, or jacket). Once you have this piece narrowed down, build the rest of the outfits around that. If you need help, email or text me photos of your options and I can help mix and match.
Mixing neutrals (grey, tan, cream) with soft colors (sage, lavender, dusty blue) or deep colors (emerald, maroon, burnt orange) always photographs well! I love a pop of yellow, too, especially on cloudy days.
I recommend against outfits with distracting text/logos, neon colors, bright red, bright orange, and wearing all black and white.
What if it rains?
I will keep an eye on the weather forecast in the week before your session. If there is a high chance of rain, I will reach out and ask if you would like to reschedule in advance, or pick a backup indoor location, or shoot rain-or-shine. Many couples choose to shoot rain-or-shine, particularly if we have selected an area with tree cover. I always bring a clear umbrella that we can use in your portraits or in between shots to stay dry. In the case we need to reschedule due to rain or storms, there is no additional charge for selecting a new date.
Will you help pose us?
Yes! I will let you know exactly where you need to be, and my goal is to get the two of you laughing, having fun, and enjoying one another's company. Expect lots of hand-holding, big hugs, and memory-making with your favorite person. There are absolutely no expectations that you lead the session.
Can we bring our dog?
Yes! Please let me know in advance so we can make a plan for how to best include them. Assuming that you will also want some photos of just the two of you, I may ask that you bring a friend who can keep your dog occupied for a portion of the session.
Can we bring our family?
Family sessions include an additional cost. Please send me an email in advance for current rates and availability.
Can we take photos on the train tracks?
No, I don't take photos on train tracks. Your safety is too important to me, and it's against the law. If we're able to take photos from a safe distance, I'm happy to include them in the background of our images.
Where will we change outfits?
If our location includes access to a restroom, we'll use that! If it doesn't, I always keep a pop-up changing tent in my car for you to use.
